I'm Apparently British

So today I'm in the supermarket that is packed at all hours of the day. I have a basket full of stuff, compared to people all around me that have carts of stuff. So I get behind this old man (old enough to be my dad, who he strangely reminded me of), who's behind 2 other carts. He waits until he is next to load his stuff on the conveyor belt, and he asks me a question. I took my headphones off and asked him to repeat his question. He was asking if I wanted to go in front of him. I wasn't in any rush so it really didn't matter to me, so I told him no. He pressed me again about it, to make sure of my decision. I told him again, no, its fine, just go ahead.
Then he asks me if I'm from England.
Huh?
I told him no, I'm not. Then he says, "Oh, I thought you didn't understand me, that's why I asked."
How does that even make logical sense? British people understand English because that's their language. If we're both speaking English, how is it that I don't understand your language? So...??? I'm also thinking maybe he thought I didn't get what he was saying or what he meant, but it wasn't like I was asking which train I should take to get to the statue of liberty.
I didn't correct him because I don't like making chit chat, and also I don't like making people feel stupid for no reason - that's just mean.
